Daily Devotional from ‘Jesus Calling’ – Aug 11

Aug 11

Come To Me.  Come to Me.  Come to Me.  This is My continual invitation to you, proclaimed in holy whispers.  When your heart and mind are quiet, you can hear Me inviting you to draw near.  Coming close to Me requires no great effort on your part; it is more like ceasing to resist the magnetic pull of My Love.  Open yourself to My loving Presence, so that I may fill you with My fullness.  I want you to experience how wide and long and high and deep is My Love for you, so that you can know My Love that surpasses knowledge.  This vast ocean of Love cannot be measured or explained, but it can be experienced.

Revelation 22:17; John 6:37; Ephesians 3:16-19

It’s amazing to think that God’s love is characterized by the vastness of the ocean.  The ocean spans across the whole earth with depths that we humans can never explore personally.  Waters so deep that there are creatures we will probably never set our eyes upon because they will live and die at the bottom of the ocean.  I find scuba diving so fascinating because it gives you a taste of what the ocean has to offer, but because of our human limitations with air and pressure on our bodies, it will never give the ocean the justice it deserves.

Heavenly Father, when we’re in Your Presence, it’s like we are wearing scuba gear and we get a small taste of what You have to offer us by getting to see some of this ocean.  But it cannot compare to when one day we will be limitless with the capabilities of our new bodies and will be able to experience the fullness of Your love.  We will truly understand exactly how wide and long and high and deep is Your love for us and then we’ll understand why things happened in our life the way that they did.

Lord, our feeble minds cannot comprehend exactly how much You love us – it is too vast and too difficult to even measure.  You use the grains of sand in all the beaches or all the stars in the universe to illustrate measurements on Your scale which we cannot even compute in our heads.  How can we then understand this love that You have for us?  The only thing that we can compare is how You sacrificed Your Son to die for us so that we may have life.

Could we give up our lives for You?  Could we ‘die’ to ourselves so that we may find life in You?  Are we willing to sacrifice all that is precious to us and give it all up so that we may be able to follow You?  These are really tough questions and it would test our faith when the rubber hits the road.  I pray that we can answer all of these questions with an emphatic ‘YES” and have no doubt in our minds that this is how we can show our love to You.

Father God, dying to ourselves and picking up our cross to follow You is the least that we can do for Your love and the sacrifices You have made so that we may have an intimate relationship with You.  We may never be able to completely repay You for the debt that You’ve paid for our sins, but living the abundant life where we are constantly in Your Presence is all that You ask.  I pray that we can fulfill that simple request and always draw near to You whenever You call for us.  I pray that we don’t resist the magnetic pull of Your love and just rest in Your Presence, in Jesus’ name, AMEN!

Drawing near,
